What is a Dumpster Dry Run?

To ensure a smooth experience for our clients, we believe in educating our customers about industry terms and potential issues that might arise during the rental process. Today, we're diving into the concept of a "dry run" - what it is, when it applies to both deliveries and pick-ups, and how we at R&L Dumpsters handle these situations.

In the dumpster rental industry, a "dry run" occurs when our driver is unable to complete a scheduled service - either dropping off or picking up a dumpster - due to circumstances beyond our control. This results in our truck returning to our yard without completing the intended task, as well as a dry-run fee.

Dry Runs During Dumpster Delivery

When dropping off a new dumpster, a dry run can happen in several situations:

  • Inaccessible Location: The designated drop-off spot is blocked by vehicles, low-hanging branches, or other obstacles.
  • Insufficient Space: The area isn't large enough to accommodate the dumpster size ordered.
  • Unsafe Conditions: The ground is too soft, uneven, or otherwise unsuitable for safely placing the dumpster.
  • Permit Issues: Required permits are not in place or visible at the time of delivery.
  • No One Present: Some locations require someone to be present to guide the placement, but no one is available.

Dry Runs During Dumpster Pick-Up

Dry runs can also occur when we attempt to pick up a dumpster. Common scenarios include:

  • Overloaded Dumpster: The dumpster is filled beyond the maximum fill line or exceeds the weight limit, making it unsafe to transport.
  • Blocked Access: Vehicles or other obstacles prevent our truck from accessing the dumpster.
  • Contaminated Waste: The dumpster contains prohibited items that we can't legally transport.
  • Unpaid Balances: In some cases, outstanding payments may need to be resolved before pick-up.

Our Commitment to You

While we strive to prevent dry runs, we understand that unforeseen circumstances can arise. In the event of a dry run, we commit to:

  • Promptly communicating the issue to you
  • Working with you to resolve the problem quickly
  • Rescheduling the service at your earliest convenience
  • Providing guidance on how to correct issues like overloading or removing prohibited items

For overloaded dumpsters, we may offer solutions such as:

  • Letting the customer remove excess waste to meet weight limits
  • Renting an additional dumpster for the excess material
  • Upgrading to a larger dumpster size if available

At R&L Dumpsters, our goal is to make your dumpster rental experience as smooth and efficient as possible. In our 15+ years of business, we've only had about 2 or or 3 runs, this is due to our clear expectations.
